STAIRCASE BONO PUBLICO

Connecting Large Square with Komenský Avenue

The Bono publico staircase, with its name referring to the “public good”, connects the Large Square in the elevated historic centre of Hradec Králové with Komenský Avenue below. It was built on the site of the original Fisherman’s Fortress, which, like the later staircase, led out onto the square between the bishop’s residence and the U Špuláků house. The reason for its construction was easier access from the town itself to the former barracks of the Hradec Králové Fortress.

Architecturally, the staircase is assessed as “a highly sophisticated expression, creating a remarkable balance between aesthetic conception and utilitarian function”. On 14 January 1964, it was listed as a cultural monument and is also part of the urban conservation area. Between 2017 and 2019, extensive renovations were carried out. During the renovations, new controlled lighting and a subtle music sound system was added to the staircase, which can be controlled from both entrance portals. The renovation and makeover has increased the use of the previously neglected staircase.
